Wildland Safety.

Always be prepared for survival situations.

Be Safe Out There. Driving to the trailhead, hiking along the trail or bushwhacking and camping in the backcountry need some special techniques and good equipment. Keep your tent, sleeping bag, backpack and other gear in tip top condition.

Wildlife needs your respect, especially if you are part of their food chain. Learn to incorporate preventative techniques in your normal routine and you’ll not need to be apprehensive while in bear or cougar country.

Safe drinking water is one of your main concerns. Water filters and water purifiers provide safe and convenient water wherever you are.

To fully enjoy the great outdoors you must feel safe and secure. Whether you're new to the wildlands or have spent several years trammeling about, learning or reviewing safety tips is always beneficial.

Be aware of hypothermia whenever in cool, moist windy situations.

So pack up your tent, sleeping bag, and camping gear on your pack frame and get out there.

Backpacking Camp Stoves

There comes a time when portable camping stoves add to the pleasure of an outing. It may be on a day hike, a quick overnighter, or and extended backpacking trip. There are dozens upon dozens of backpacking camp stoves to choose from, models of all different sizes, configurations, and power levels.

You can find featherweight, pocket camp stoves that run off tinder or chemical fuel tablets that are handy for a day trip coffee break.

Portable camping stoves are the next step up. They’ll weigh 3.5 ounces, but commonly fall in the 11-ounce to 1 1/2 –pound range. Fuel sources for camp stoves vary widely: straight propane, alcohol, butane, white-gas, kerosene, iso-butane, Isobutane-LPG, jet fuel, diesel fuel, and, some use multi-fuels.

Weight of the camp stove is a top concern. But don’t forget the fuel weight. Camp stove efficiency is usually measured by boiling time, usually indicated by how long it takes to boil a liter of water, as well as the number of BTU output (somewhere near 10,000 is the usual minimum). Longevity of the fuel source running at high is also very important, depending on what you're going to cook. When choosing a camp stove balance all of this against the length of your stay: The longer you're out, the more food you need and the more fuel needed to cook it.
