Size. Many people choose lightweight backpacking tents that are one person larger
than the manufacturer’s design size. A general rule is 15 square feet per
person. Basic sizes are: solo, backpacking (2-4 people), or family (4-9 people).
Season. A two-season backpacking camping tent is strictly for fair
weather use, or for the kids in the back yard where the house is a handy
retreat. A three season tent normally will serve well in rainy weather, but
heavy snow could be a problem. One rated as four season will be heavier
construction, more wind resistant, and have higher grade fabric.
Type of use. For casual campers a basic three season
tent will usually suffice. A full length fly is important to add some
insulation, reduce condensation and wicking during cool/wet weather, Backpackers
and high country campers will need to balance the desire for lightweight backpacking tents,
versus roominess and convenience. Car campers or long-term campers can choose
tents of heavier material, frames and more room.
Other considerations. Ground conditions, pole
material (aluminum or fiberglass), flooring, clips or sleeves for pole
attachment, door location, ease of set-up, and other factors need taken into
consideration. Nothing is better than personal experience to guide the tent selection
for your use.
